From the Slopes of the Andean Mountain Range
The Cauca department is home to one of Colombia’s central and western mountain
ranges, as well as the Cauca and Magdalena rivers. Positioned in the southwest of Colombia, Cauca shares borders with Valle del Cauca, Tolima, Huila, Caquetá, Putumayo and Nariño, while also being adjacent to the Pacific Ocean.
Caldono is situated in the northern part of the Cauca department, nestled on the western slope of the Andean mountain range. The region’s landscape includes rainforests, basins, volcanoes, natural parks and a variety of crops. It stands out as an excellent region for coffee cultivation due to its optimal climate, rich soil and ample water resources.
Ethnographically, Caldono is primarily inhabited by indigenous communities. These communities, rooted in the Paeces ethnic groups of Tierradentro, possess distinct dialects, customs, traditions and work methodologies. Many members of these indigenous communities are smallholder coffee farmers.
Notably, the most common coffee varieties found in Caldono include Castillo, Caturra and Colombia. This washed lot underwent sun-drying on patios or parabolic beds.
The indigenous communities in Caldono cultivate coffee using time-honoured techniques, passed down through generations, making Caldono a distinguished region not only for its geographical allure but also for its contribution to Colombia’s renowned coffee industry.
